Grief and Depression
Depression is a serious condition for any person. Depression can be from a chronic pathological grief reaction. It focuses the anger or sadness of loss upon self causing loss of self esteem. Since it leaves the normal trajectories of normal grief reaction and creates unnatural responses, it leaves the person lost in the cloud of grief. Unable to escape, physical, social, and mental complications can arise that can become dangerous for the depressed person. Grief counseling techniques attempt to diagnose depression early and guide the depressed client to the proper health care professionals where they can receive medical and therapeutic treatment. In these conditions the depression may be due to the situation of loss, or the stress of grief may actually alter a susceptible person to develop the problem from an inbalance in brain chemistry. Clients may actually need to be prescribed medication therapy when the problem of depression is related to an issue with stress and brain chemistry isses. The American Academy of Grief offers certifications in grief counseling for qualified professionals.
